Although his work can be difficult to pigeon-hole, it is clear that Kurt Schwertsik (born 1935) is one of Austria’s most noteable composers. He is highly regarded for his role in demonstrating new aspects of modern music in a traditional music setting and also famous for creating the 'Third Viennese School'.

A pupil of Joseph Marx and Karl Schiske at the Academy of Music in Vienna, he later studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne and Darmstadt but rejected serialism in favour of new forms of tonality. His music is mercurial and idiosyncratic with a refreshing lightness of touch and his search for an 'alternative' modern culture draws inspiration from Satie and the Dada movement.

In 1958 he founded the ensemble 'die reihe' with fellow composer and conductor Friedrich Cerha (famous for finishing the opera Lulu, by Alban Berg) and later, in 1968, the ensemble 'MOB art & tone ART' with Otto Matthäus Zykan and Heinz Karl Gruber.
